Good afternoon. I would like to provide a few updates about recent developments in Congress and share some important information.

Government Shutdown Ends

This past Friday, the President, the House, and the Senate finally agreed to end the unnecessary 35-day government shutdown – the longest in U.S. history. More than 800,000 federal employees missed multiple paychecks, and many government contractors will never recoup their lost wages. If Congress and the president once again can't negotiate proper funding levels and strategy for border security by Feb. 15, another costly and damaging shut down could occur.

I oppose funding a border wall. I also oppose risking further financial strain on our economy and public servants that could potentially affect travel safety and harm so many other Americans who depend on the government that works for them. I have called for the House, Senate, and President to each appoint two independent mediators to negotiate and present unanimous solutions in order to prevent partisan battles from resulting in future shutdowns.

Speaking Out Against U.S. Intervention in Venezuela

Last week, the Trump Administration announced support for a leadership coup in Venezuela, recognizing opposition leader Juan Guaidó as president, despite President Nicolas Maduro's continued rule. Have we not learned from our numerous failed regime change interventions in Latin America? I discussed this issue further with Democracy Now.

Added to House Oversight and Reform Committee

As a member of the new Democratic majority in the U.S. House, I am proud to inform you that Speaker Pelosi named me to the Committee on Oversight and Reform. The committee's broad jurisdiction will serve a crucial role as a watchdog over the Trump Administration, price-gouging pharmaceutical companies, and much more. Read more from Axios on our plans to speak truth to power and work on behalf of the American people. I will also continue to serve on the Committees on Armed Services and Budget and was elected First Vice Chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, the largest Democratic membership organization in the House.
