April 2018
Good afternoon. I would like to provide a few updates about recent developments in Congress and share some important information.
Rising Housing Costs
This Saturday May 5th, I will host a round table conversation with housing experts and stakeholders. Our goal is to identify the causes and potential solutions to soaring housing costs across Silicon Valley. Too many hard-working residents are being rapidly priced out of the market. We have a serious problem when our teachers, nurses, and social workers can't afford to live in the neighborhoods they serve. We will discuss what municipal, state and federal governments are doing to mitigate this crisis, and what more needs to be done. This discussion will take place from 1:00 to 3:00 PM at UC Santa Cruz Silicon Valley Campus, 3175 Bowers Avenue, Santa Clara. RSVP and further details can be found here.
Internet Bill of Rights
A few weeks ago, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was the major witness testifying before House and Senate committees about Facebook's role in the Cambridge Analytica consumer data breach. The hearings revealed a technology knowledge gap in Congress and that tech company leaders have a responsibility to keep our data safe. Tech companies need to regain the public's trust, but it's not their job to regulate themselves. That's the responsibility of the legislative branch. I'm working with Representatives Eshoo, Lofgren and our colleagues to advance an "Internet Bill of Rights" so that Americans have clearly defined protections on the web and can know that their data is safe and under control.
Town hall
It was great to see so many of you and to answer your questions at my April town hall meeting in San Jose. I hope to see you at my next town hall starting at 7:30 PM on Wednesday, May 2nd at Quinlan Community Center in Cupertino. If you can't make it, you can watch on Facebook Live. MLK guided by Gandhi
When Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. marched across the Edmund Pettis Bridge in Selma, Alabama in 1965, he was walking with the winds of Gandhi at his back. It has been said that Dr. King always carried two books with him: The Bible and The Gandhi Reader. My grandfather was imprisoned in India fighting for independence alongside Gandhi. Read my op-ed with civil rights hero John Lewis on their intertwined freedom movements.
Fifty years later, King's vision must remain Congress' cause
In March, I had the distinct honor of joining members of Congress on a civil rights pilgrimage through the South. We visited Selma, Montgomery, and the Lorraine Motel in Memphis where Dr. King was assassinated. This past month, I published an essay with House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer reflecting on Dr. King's message and our responsibility to carry on his work and vision. Read the full piece in the Baltimore Sun.
