Last month's torch-lit white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, a response to the planned removal of a statue of Robert E. Lee from a public park, kickstarted a national dialogue about how communities should address this nation's centuries-long history of violence and discrimination against African Americans. Democratic politicians and others, pushing back against the old arguments about maintaining our "heritage," have called for the removal of additional Confederate statues and monuments from public spaces.

About 150 people turned out Wednesday evening at a town hall hosted by U.S. Rep. Ro Khanna at Ohlone College's Jackson Theatre in Fremont. Audience members lobbed questions at the District 17 congressman about local and international issues alike.

Silicon Valley Congressman, Rep. Ro Khanna, said he's glad Facebook is turning over some 3,000 ads-linked to the Russian government-- to congressional investigators because it shows transparency. He says the country needs more cooperation between intelligence agencies and tech leaders. He calls the situation, "A new problem for our democracy."

An Indian American congressman has said that American lawmakers should make sure that the H-1B visa program, popular among Indian techies, is not abused to undercut the U.S. job market and attract the best and the brightest into the country.

The H-1B visa is a non-immigrant visa that allows U.S. companies to employ foreign workers in specialty occupations that require theoretical or technical expertise in specialized fields.

Northern California Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) unveiled on Wednesday legislation that will give substantial tax credits to low- and middle-income Americans. His goals include combating two of the most troublesome aspects of the American economy: income stagnation within the working class and rising instability caused by a shift from secure jobs with benefits to jobs (or gigs) lacking them.

More broadly, he's motivated by surging interest in Silicon Valley in using income redistribution as compensation for the costs imposed on workers by increasing automation.

The White House is bracing for a tax reform fight, with Democrats already on guard against any plan rewarding the rich (US president Trump now denies this will happen: "The rich will not be gaining at all with this plan," he said on Sept. 13). On the other end of the spectrum (and the country), Silicon Valley congressional representative Ro Khanna is introducing his own plan: a $1.4 trillion tax credit that could move the US closer to something resembling a universal basic income (UBI).
