STATEMENT: Rep. Ro Khanna Statement on FY19 Budget Proposal

February 12, 2018

Washington, DC – Rep. Ro Khanna, a member of the House Budget Committee, issued the following statement after the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) today released President Trump's budget request for fiscal year 2019.

"After giving away massive tax cuts to millionaires, billionaires, and corporations through his tax plan, President Trump's budget proposal continues to break up the federal government and does not look out for most Americans. His proposed drastic cuts to non-defense domestic programs after 2019, while terminating a host of other programs such as the Manufacturing Extension Program, moves our nation in the wrong direction and away from his promise for robust investments in infrastructure. We must invest in modernizing our nation's infrastructure so that we can compete in and thrive in a 21st century global economy.

"The President's plan slashes investment in health care, anti-poverty programs and economic growth initiatives, including $1.7 trillion in cuts to Medicare and our other safety net programs over a decade. As population and inflation go up, non-defense discretionary funding goes down every year – compounding the adverse impact of these enormous cuts.

"I cannot support the President's proposal and will continue to prioritize working Americans and the middle class in Congress."

Rep. Khanna and other members of the Committee will conduct a hearing on the President's budget request with OMB Director Mick Mulvaney on Wednesday, February 14, 2018, at 10:00 am Eastern.
