STATEMENT: Rep. Ro Khanna on FY 2017 Budget Resolution and Keeping the ACA

January 13, 2017
Press Release

Washington, D.C. — Rep. Ro Khanna (CA-17) released the following remarks he will make on the House floor this morning on the need to keep the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and vote against the budget resolution around the health care law. These are as prepared.

S Con Res 3, FY 2017 Budget Resolution

Mr. Speaker, I rise in opposition to the rule and the underlying bill.

I will vote against this legislation as the means by which the majority would repeal the Affordable Care Act.

This act would cancel affordable, quality care; preventative services and consumer protections for millions of Americans who need care the most. It would reverse progress made to slow rising health care costs and to strengthen Medicare.

I commend two senators (Sanders and Klobuchar) for fighting this bill by offering an amendment to permit the re-importation of prescription drugs. I am disappointed that 13 of their colleagues voted against it because the pharmaceutical industry wields far too much wealth and power with its 1,400 lobbyists and unlimited money.

We must fight to protect families and under-served communities over special interests and the powerful. Mr. Speaker, I urge my colleagues to vote no on this resolution and yield back the balance of my time.
