STATEMENT: Rep. Khanna Urges Senate to End Unauthorized US Involvement in Yemen
Washington, DC -- As the Senate is expected to debate S.J. Res. 54, a resolution to force the first-ever Senate debate and vote to remove U.S. Armed Forces from unauthorized hostilities, Rep. Khanna, member of the House Armed Services committee and sponsor of H.Con.Res. 81, a resolution closely resembling the Senate version, issued the following statement:
"Yemen has been devastated by the three-year long war. Families have been torn apart by massive casualties and the world's worst cholera epidemic and humanitarian crisis. This week the Senate will vote on whether our nation's armed forces can continue unauthorized involvement in a war that is pushing millions of people to the edge of famine. Congress should be allowed to exercise its constitutional duty, and I urge my colleagues in the other chamber to end this unprecedented effort to stop U.S. military intervention in this illegal war."
Background:
Currently, the U.S. provides mid-air refueling for Saudi and UAE warplanes that are conducting air strikes in Yemen, as well as assistance with bomb targeting. The bombing campaign supports a blockade that prevents food and medicine reaching the people of Yemen resulting in a devastating humanitarian crisis. Nearly 19 million Yemenis are suffering from food insecurity, or 60 percent of the population, and a child dies every 10 minutes from preventable causes and diseases.
