STATEMENT: KHANNA ON HOUSE PASSAGE OF DEBT CEILING EXTENSION

October 12, 2021

Washington, DC – October 12, 2021 – Today, Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA), Deputy Whip for the Congressional Progressive Caucus, issued the following statement on the House passage of a rule to temporarily extend our country's debt limit through December 3rd.

"I was glad to vote to extend the debt limit today and ensure that the U.S. can continue to pay its bills. While we have avoided economic disaster for now, Republicans are playing with fire by turning this into a partisan issue," said Rep. Ro Khanna. "We have to consider what would actually happen if the U.S. defaulted on its debt. Every aspect of federal spending would be upended from funding for schools and affordable housing to social security payments and Medicaid and Medicare reimbursements. The American people rely on this funding and I hope that come December we treat this like the bipartisan responsibility that it is."
