RELEASE: RO KHANNA INTRODUCES RESOLUTION CALLING FOR U.S. ACCOUNTABILITY FOR COMPLICITY IN EL SALVADOR’S CIVIL WAR

January 11, 2023

Washington, DC – Representative Ro Khanna (CA-17) today introduced a resolution that calls on the U.S. to acknowledge its complicity in El Salvador's brutal civil war and urges the Biden Administration to support strengthening human rights protections and humanitarian assistance in the country. The resolution was introduced ahead of the 31st anniversary of the Chapultepec Peace Accords on January 16th marking a formal end to the conflict.

"As we mark the anniversary of the end of the horrific civil war in El Salvador, the U.S. must recognize its own role in fueling this conflict and work to support human rights, education, and violence prevention for Salvadorans. The U.S. should also extend Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Salvadorans in America and create a pathway to citizenship for TPS recipients. This resolution is a step in ensuring accountability for our nation's role in the instability and violence in El Salvador and honoring the Salvadoran communities who are a vital part of the U.S. today."

The resolution calls for:

  • President Biden to formally acknowledge the U.S.'s involvement in the Salvadoran Civil War from 1979-1992;
  • The Administration to work through non-governmental entities to invest in education, violence prevention, human rights protections, creating jobs, and strengthening the judicial system;
  • Extended Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Salvadorans in the United States and for Congress to grant longer-term protections and a pathway to citizenship for TPS beneficiaries.
  • Recognition of the extraordinary contributions of Salvadoran communities in the U.S.
