RELEASE: KHANNA JOINS PRESIDENT BIDEN FOR SIGNING OF THE CHIPS AND SCIENCE ACT TO MAKE THINGS IN AMERICA

August 9, 2022

Washington, D.C. — Today, Rep. Ro Khanna, Deputy Whip of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, joined President Biden behind his desk at the White House for the signing of the CHIPS and Science Act.

The bill includes provisions based on Rep. Khanna's Endless Frontier Act with Majority Leader Schumer, Sen. Young, and Rep. Gallagher to establish a new Directorate at the National Science Foundation to advance research and development in key technology focus areas and create at least ten technology hubs across the country.

"In 2000, our trade deficit with China was about 80 billion dollars. Then we made the mistake of giving them most-favored-nation status. Today, America's trade deficit with China is over $350 billion dollars. The CHIPS and Science bill based on my Endless Frontier Act is a down payment on making things in America again and reducing the trade deficit. The last time we had a trade surplus was 1975. We need a vision for a new economic patriotism to make things in America again and have a trade surplus again. The CHIPS and Science bill based on my Endless Frontier Act is a step to do that.

"I was recently in factory towns like Anderson, Indiana; Dubuque, Iowa; and Janesville, Wisconsin. We abandoned many factory workers there for decades. Today's CHIPS and Science Act is about building new industry and new factories in America."
