Rep. Ro Khanna Announces Congressional Nomination Committee for CA-17 Applications

Santa Clara, CA — The Office of Congressman Ro Khanna is seeking applications from high school students who are interested in attending a U.S. service academy. A distinguished panel of military academy alumni and civic leaders will evaluate the applications for Rep. Khanna to nominate one individual for each vacant academy slot allotted to the 17th Congressional District.

A congressional nomination is required for students wishing to enter the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, NY, the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD, the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY.

“It is an honor to nominate the highly-qualified young men and women of the 17th Congressional District to attend our nation’s service academies,” said Rep. Khanna. “I thank the 17thCongressional District Service Academy Nomination Committee for their participation in the selection process and recognize the respect we owe those in service. I encourage every interested student in my District to consider applying to one of these esteemed academies.”

The appointment committee is headed by Former Mayor of San Jose, Chuck Reed (U.S. Air Force Academy). Other members include Carolyn Lewis (U.S. Military Academy), Rick Burgess (U.S. Naval Academy), Josh Kristoff (U.S. Naval Academy), and Christopher Moylan (CA-17 District Director).

Students who wish to start at a service academy in July 2018 should complete the Military Academy Nominations application online at Applications will be accepted through October 15, 2017.

Successful applicants will have a broad academic background, the ability to pass a physical aptitude test, and strong leadership potential. An applicant must also be a U.S. citizen, a high school graduate between the ages of 17 and 23, unmarried, have no dependents, and be of high moral character. Acceptance of a service academy appointment requires at least a nine-year service obligation, including four years at an academy and five years of active duty service.
